MBA is
incorporated and governed by a Board of Directors. Since 1936,
MBA has provided child care for children between two and five
years of age. While children from all socio-economic backgrounds
have attended MBA, emphasis is placed on the needs of inner city
and at-risk families. We make every effort to accommodate the needs
of these families to help them improve their lifestyles.
As a non-profit agency serving primarily low income families,
MBA has faced financial challenges over the years. The building
MBA occupies is owned by the City of Lynchburg and is virtually
rent free to the program. However, costs of maintenance and upkeep
are MBA’s responsibility.
We rely heavily on our fees as the major source of income. In
addition, MBA receives Federal Food reimbursement as well as a
United Way allocation on a monthly basis.

Mary Bethune Academy happily accepts gifts and donations
throughout the year from individuals and organizations. As a
non-profit organization and as a 501c3 corporation, all gifts are
tax deductable.
All gifts/donations are deposited into our general
operations fund, unless restricted by the donor.
Scholarship Fund gifts help offset the cost of our sliding fee scale based on ability to pay. No
child is turned away based on the family(s) ability to pay.
Materials & Supplies gifts are restricted to inside material and supply
consumables, plus books and durable toys for the children.
Playground gifts are used to maintain the children's outside
play area, including new equipment, repair of existing, and
licensing standards. It does NOT include grounds work, such as grass
cutting and lawn maintenance.
Transportation gifts help offset the rising costs of gasoline,
insurance and related costs to continue providing this valuable
service.
