United Way of Central Virginia Honors Mary Bethune Academy Employee
of 26 years
On February 14th 2006 at the Annual Volunteer Recogninion Breakfast held in downtown
Lynchburg at the Holiday Inn Select, the United Way of Central Virginia
recognized the recipient of the ......
Nancy L. Sorrells Memorial Award
Presented annually to a staff member of a human/social service
organization whose professionalism and dedication reflects those
characteristics embodied by Nancy during her twenty-four years of service
to the United Way of Central Virginia.
In part, Jerry's letter of nomination read...
"Jerry has driven the van and maintained Bethune's facility for 26 years. He is one of the kindest
and most dedicated people I have ever had the pleasure of working with.
Each school day without fail, Jerry is at the center by 5:00 a.m.to get the building going and
to begin transporting children. At 5:45 he begins his four long trips daily to all areas of the city,
two in the morning to pick up children and two in the afternoon to return them safely home. Being able
to place full confidence in Jerry to ensure that the van is ready to go each day, gassed up and properly
maintained is truly an asset to Bethune's daily operations.
More important than the duties Jerry performs is his love for the children and his connection with
their parents. Almost daily, parents and even grandparents tell me that Jerry was their driver when they
attended Bethune, and they always express admiration and respect for him. These long standing relationships
in addition to the positive impression he makes on new families speaks volumes about his value to us."
